EXPANSION TANK

    An Expansion tank is used to absorb the expansion of the thermal fluid as it increases in temperature from ambient temperature to the full operating temperature of the system. Typically, the expansion tank is sized to be 1/4 full in the cold condition. At the full operating conditions, the tank is 3/4 full. To prevent oxidation of the thermal fluid, the expansion tank is blanketed with an inert gas such as Nitrogen. The tank is designed to the ASME Pressure Vessel Code, ASME Sec.VIII, Div. II, and so stamped. The tank can be horizontal or Vertical. A horizontal tank is illustrated in the drawing below.
